Function of the Refrigeration Cycle

Key Concepts

The second law of thermodynamics helps us understand how the basic refrigeration cycle works:
“Heat always flows from a material with higher temperature to one with lower temperature.”

Refrigeration cycle or heat pump?
Essentially, they operate on the same principle. Depending on the application, either the heat entering or leaving the system is considered useful. In both cases, electrical energy is needed to reverse the natural direction of heat flow.

There are various technologies used for cooling – the most common is compression refrigeration. When we speak of a refrigeration cycle, we are usually referring to the compression refrigeration cycle.

Understanding the refrigeration cycle involves three key physical processes:

  • Gas that condenses into a liquid releases heat

  • Liquid that evaporates into a gas absorbs heat

  • The condensation and evaporation temperatures rise with increasing pressure

How does the refrigeration cycle work?

In the refrigeration cycle, a heat transfer medium (refrigerant) is alternately compressed and expanded, which changes its temperature. The resulting thermal energy is either absorbed from or released into the surrounding environment – enabling controlled heating or cooling.

A compressor compresses the refrigerant, generating heat. When the compressed refrigerant is expanded, it produces cold. This released energy can be used to heat or cool a space or medium, depending on the application.

For efficient operation of the refrigeration cycle, subcooling and superheating must be optimally balanced. Factors influencing this include the required system capacity, refrigerant type and its specific properties, and the refrigerant charge.

When the refrigerant is directed into the evaporator after expansion, the evaporator cools significantly. This can cause moisture in the surrounding air to condense on the cold surface. To safely remove the resulting condensate, a REFCO condensate pump can be used.

Condensate Pumps in the Refrigeration Cycle

A properly functioning air conditioning system is essential for any business. REFCO offers a well-matched range of condensate pumps – engineered for reliable performance in the refrigeration cycle.
Condensate pumps remove moisture from the evaporator and prevent water damage and system faults.

The VAMP-F and VAMP-X models represent the latest pump generation:
The VAMP-F is the most compact and quietest pump on the market. With a height of just 26 mm, an integrated reservoir, optical sensor and a flexible extension hose that serves as a reservoir substitute, it can be installed tool-free and directly connected to the condensate tray – ideal for tight installation spaces.

The VAMP-X offers maximum flexibility: its optical sensor is housed in an external reservoir, allowing for free placement within the system.

Both pumps operate extremely quietly (below 20 dB(A)), deliver up to 22 liters per hour, and reach a maximum head of 15 meters – making them the ideal solution for refrigeration cycle applications with minimal maintenance requirements.
Thanks to the adapter plug, both models can be easily integrated into existing installations – ideal as replacements.

The range is rounded out by the trusted COMBI and GOBI II models – compact, quiet, and easy to install.
The COMBI features a separate pump and sensor for flexible installation options. The GOBI II can be mounted discreetly on the left or right side of the evaporator unit.
